Have you found your FLOW?

What exactly is flow?

Is flow something you can see, hear, taste, touch, or smell? Or is it something deeper—something you feel rather than sense with your body? Can it be practiced like a skill, something that grows stronger with time and focus? In his book “Stolen Focus”, Johann Hari explains Mihaly’s study of flow as a state where you are fully present in an activity. Your thoughts and actions become one, and time seems to slow down or disappear. Your mind and body work in perfect sync, without distraction. This is the flow state.

We all want to experience flow, but in today’s world, it is not easy to find. There are constant distractions, unnessary notifications, and more things fighting for our attention every day. Staying focused feels harder than ever, and being truly present feels rare. But for me, kayaking has become a way to find that focus again. It allows me to connect with myself and the natural world around me. When I am out on the water, surrounded by trees and open sky, I feel calm and clear.

During these moments, my attention is fully on the present. I think only about the direction I am going, and how sore my arms will be the next day due to the  rhythm of movement. Sometimes, I listen to music that brings back good memories and makes the journey feel even more special. Other times, I enjoy the quiet and listen to the sounds of nature. The birds, the wind, and the water help me stay grounded.

As I glide across a river, a lake, or the ocean, I feel at peace. Kayaking brings me back to myself. It reminds me that I am not just moving forward through life. I am flowing through it with intention and presence.
